Why is Church Important?

Why is church important? The Bible encourages Christians not to give up the habit of meeting together in Hebrews 10, but what is the reason? Here’s what the author of Hebrews says:
“23 Let us hold on to the confession of our hope without wavering, since he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, 25 not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.” [Heb 10:23-25 CSB]
Because our faithful God sent Jesus to die and rise for us, we have the certain hope of eternal life and the forgiveness of our sins through Him. In light of that, we meet together with other Christians to encourage each other, especially in the areas of love and good works. Our calling from God is to be people who demonstrate the love of God with our words and deeds, but we can’t accomplish that on our own.
Why is church important? Church is important because it is there that we receive the gifts that deliver God’s forgiveness to us. It is there that we find a community that encourages us to live out our faith with love and good works. And it is also there that we gain an eternal perspective.
Look again at the final phrase of the passage: “encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.” This is referring to the day of the Lord when Jesus comes back to recreate the world and bring the new heavens and new earth together forever. Church is important because it gives us an eternal perspective.
I am thankful to be in this community with you as we encourage each other to hold onto the hope we have in Jesus as we walk together with Him!
